| Chester arrived at HRA in Augst 2006. He had suffered horrific injuries to both his back legs in a fence injury. Although the vets assured his owners that he would eventually get better they could not afford his treatment. They contacted HRA to see if we could help, as they saw their only other option was to send him to the doggers, which they did not want to do.As we had some room at that present time, we decided to take Chester on. | ![]() |
When he arrived at HRA and got off the float we saw the very complicated bandages that covered both his back legs past his hocks.
The next day our vet came to change his bandages and we saw for the first time just how bad his injuries were. One leg had a complete laceration of his tendon, and a fair bit of his bone was exposed. The other leg was not quite so bad, but still a real mess.
Chester had to have his bandages changed every 3 days by the vet for a month or so, and then we could stretch the changes out to a week or so. He made remarkable progress.
He is a very sweet horse, and put up with all his medical treatment pretty well, although he did need a sedative to get those bandages back on!
He was also a bit thin, so we had to increase his weight at the same time. Now over 12 months later, he looks a wonderful picture of health. He does walk with a strange gait – almost like he has stringhalt. The vets feel that this is because of the way the tissue and skin has grown back as his legs have healed. His funny walk may never go away, so in time we may try to find him a companion home.
